Gib Arnold is the new Men’s Head Basketball Coach for the University of Hawaii. The Punahou alumnus and former USC Assistant returns home to see if he can turn around the UH Hoops program. Knowing of the disappointing season just experienced by Rainbow fans, the question emerging from the basketball community is is Arnold the right guy for the job and can he take Raibow Warrior Basketball to the next level? With credentials that include Pepperdine, Vanderbilt, Loyola Marymount and University of Southern California, the well traveled coach has probably picked up a few tricks of the trade that help him be effective. The challenge for Coach Arnold is can he effectively recruit the players needed to vault the UH Hoop program to the level that UH fans deserve? It all starts now for Arnold as he immediatley hits the recruiting trail looking to feel some holes left behind by departing seniors.  Stay tuned……

The University of Hawaii  men’s basketball team ended it’s 2009-2010 season 10-20, (3-13) but was it worth Coach Bob Nash losing his job as the program’s head coach? Yes, the university did say that Coach Nash’s contract could be extended if he met their performance clause which means winning 18 games and or qualifying for the WAC post season tournament. No the team did not have a winning season nor did they qualify for the conference tournament, but we’re talking about Bob Nash, member of the Fab 5 team that put the University of Hawaii Hoops program on the map, and the man who served 2 1/2 decades waiting for his opportunity behind Riley Wallace. Coach Bob Nash was not just any other UH Coach, he’s forever linked to the University because of the historical achievements he played a major role in as a player. Where’s the loyalty from the administration to a man who has given so much to the University of Hawaii?

I’m sure Coach Nash was not pleased with the outcome of this season but what was to be expected from a team that was decimated by injuties from the beginning of the season when team captain Bill Amis was lost for the season with a food injury then later losing your starting guard for the duration to hernia surgery? What we know now is that the Nash era is over and now the Bows are in search of a new leader. Who ever the new coach may be, we hope he’s ready to deal with the environment that comes with being the Head Basketball Coach at the University of Hawaii.

Stay tuned….

Pahoa Claims Division II Title over Kailua and Iolani knocks off the defending Champs Kamehameha to win Division I Crown in the 2010 Hawaiian Airlines Boys Basketball CHAMPIONSHIPS
.

The Pahoa Daggers took their fans on a roller coaster rde on saaturday as they let a 7 point lead be diminished but cloclosed the deal by knocking down late minute free throws. Pahoa was lead by 6′1″ freshman Nick Fisher who scored 17 points and crucial free throws with 2.7 seconds remaining to cring it home. It is Pahoa’s first Basketball Championship in school history.

When Iolani and Kamehameha go head to head you expect a good one and they did not disappoint as the two duked it out for the Div I State Championship. The Warriors were the defending champs and came out looking like it may be a repeat as they lead 12-2 at the end of the 1st qtr. Iolani buckled down on defense and took better shots as they ended the half down by 4, 15-19.

The 2nd half  began with The Red Raiders taking control as they took their first lead of the game 30-29 when leading scorer Kainoa Chu pumped in a 3 pointer with 3:06 left in the 3rd quarter. After Andrew Skalman’s 3 point put Iolani up 35-31 late in the fourth it seemed the win was at hand for the Red Raiders. But the Warriors showed why they are the  defending champs as they clawed back into it and tied the game up 43-43 behind the hot shooting of Micah Christenson who scored 23. The night belonged to Kainoa Chu who with drained the game winning 3 pointer as time expired giving him a total of 27 points on the night and the honor of winning Iolani the Division I State Championship.

What’s up Football fans! The 2009 NFL season is officially over and I think all fans can say we got our money’s worth as the Superbowl came down to the two best teams The New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts. Most fans put their money on the Colts and the reigning MVP Peyton Manning, but it was Drew Brees and the Saints that showed that their season was not only magical but also destiny. The city of New Orleans has its champion now as they continue to pick up the pieces left behind by hurricane Katrina and rebuild their lives. Congratulations to the Saints and the entire city of New Orleans, no other city deserves to raise the Lombardi trophy more than you.

Aloha Hoop Fans! Well in case you haven’t heard another ABA franchise has failed to deliver in Hawaii. We know you hoop fans were very excited about what we put together the first two games but once again ownership has let us and the entire Hawaii hoop fan base down by not being truthful about their financial status. We hope that one day a legitimate basketball organization will come to the islands and give sports fans what they really deserve, a bonified organization that will give its players a real opportunity to play and a team that fans will be proud to support. The High School Football season was another exciting one to witness and as hoped for the two best teams were the last two standing as they faced off to see who was really worthy to take hoe the title as The 2009 HHSAA State Football Champions. Kamehameha and Kahuku advanced to the finals and all of Hawaii awaited to see who the true champion was. Kahuku used their traditional running attack to make it this far while Kamehameha bolstered a more balanced attack having a well established wide receiver core to advance to the championship game. Kahuku’s traditional style of offense asn’t enough to stop the Kamehameha Warriors as they go on to win their first state championship title under Head Coach David Stant. The Wahine took us on a great ride this season as they advanced to the Final 4 of the NCAA Volleyball Championships. The Wahine were looking for one more to advance to the Championship game and a chance at making their dreams come true and become the NCAA Champs. Standing in their way were the Penn State Lady Nittany Lions who seem to have a destiny of their own having already won more then 100 consecutive matches and 3 straight champioship titles. The Rainbow Wahine have put themselves in a great position as they won Game #1. But this only seemed to wake up the sleeping Nittany Lions who won the next three games on their way to winning their 4th consecutive NCAA Championship and keeping their 100+ match winning streak alive heading into next season. With such a young team returning so many starters next season maybe the Wahine will have their revenge next season on their way to another title run. Congratulations Wahine and goodluck in your off-season preparations. Go Bows!
