Pahoa Claims Division II Title over Kailua and Iolani knocks off the defending Champs Kamehameha to win Division I Crown in the 2010 Hawaiian Airlines Boys Basketball CHAMPIONSHIPS
.

The Pahoa Daggers took their fans on a roller coaster rde on saaturday as they let a 7 point lead be diminished but cloclosed the deal by knocking down late minute free throws. Pahoa was lead by 6′1″ freshman Nick Fisher who scored 17 points and crucial free throws with 2.7 seconds remaining to cring it home. It is Pahoa’s first Basketball Championship in school history.

When Iolani and Kamehameha go head to head you expect a good one and they did not disappoint as the two duked it out for the Div I State Championship. The Warriors were the defending champs and came out looking like it may be a repeat as they lead 12-2 at the end of the 1st qtr. Iolani buckled down on defense and took better shots as they ended the half down by 4, 15-19.

The 2nd half  began with The Red Raiders taking control as they took their first lead of the game 30-29 when leading scorer Kainoa Chu pumped in a 3 pointer with 3:06 left in the 3rd quarter. After Andrew Skalman’s 3 point put Iolani up 35-31 late in the fourth it seemed the win was at hand for the Red Raiders. But the Warriors showed why they are the  defending champs as they clawed back into it and tied the game up 43-43 behind the hot shooting of Micah Christenson who scored 23. The night belonged to Kainoa Chu who with drained the game winning 3 pointer as time expired giving him a total of 27 points on the night and the honor of winning Iolani the Division I State Championship.

The High School Football season was another exciting one to witness and as hoped for the two best teams were the last two standing as they faced off to see who was really worthy to take hoe the title as The 2009 HHSAA State Football Champions. Kamehameha and Kahuku advanced to the finals and all of Hawaii awaited to see who the true champion was. Kahuku used their traditional running attack to make it this far while Kamehameha bolstered a more balanced attack having a well established wide receiver core to advance to the championship game. Kahuku’s traditional style of offense asn’t enough to stop the Kamehameha Warriors as they go on to win their first state championship title under Head Coach David Stant. The Div I HHSAA Girls State Basketball Championship couldn’t have been better scripted as the only two teams to win the title the past 7 years had a met head to head to settle some old matters.

The first half of the game was as expected as the #1 and #2 ranked teams in the state were in a 9-8 Battle at the end of the 1st period. Konawaena’s Freshman guard Emalia Galdera Began to heat up in the 2nd qtr knocking down bak to back baskets putting her team up 21-16. Punahou did close the gap with two free throws to end the first half 21-18.

In the 2nd half Galdera continued to enforce her will knocking down a deep 3 pointer that gave Konawaena 38-29 through 3 periods. Galdera opened the 4th with another jumper to put her squad up by 10 and suddenly the fight in the Buff N Blue stood up. Janelle Nomura and Mysha Satarka lead the charge for Punahou as some good uptempo defense caused a couple of steals resulting in a few free throws and some easy layups the game was tied up at 44 at the end of regulation and it was a brand new game.

Overtime was a bit whacky as Hunatu Smith hit the only field goal for Konawaena and Punahou could only produce two free throws resulting in another period to determine our Div I champ.

Galdera looked determined to not have to play any longer to be crowned champion scoring 7  of her 23 points in the 2nd overtime to help the Lady Wildcats of Konawaena win the 2009 HHSAA Div I Girls State Basketball Championships 54-50. Galdera was also named tournament MVP.

The Div II Championship was a head to head battle between neighbor island programs as Kamehameha(Big Island) took on the Lady Farmers from Molokai. Kamehameha seemed poised to claim the title controlling the first 3 periods of play and after Kayla Lacaran-Costales hit a 3 pointer at the buzzer, the ladies from the Big Island were ahead 39-33 with one quarter to play.

Molokai came to play 4 quarters and after leading scorer Kalei Adolpho hit two free throws the game was suddenly tied at 42 with 2:09 remianing. Molokai took advantage of a Kamehameha turnover when Adolpho made a layup giving her team their first lead in quite some time 44-42. Kamehameha had their chances but a turnover with 8 seconds remaining and a free throw by Adolpho the gme was decided as The Molokai Lady Farmers were crowned the Div II Girls Basketball Champions.

Adolpho lead all scores with 21 points, 19 rebounds and 6 blocks earning her game and tournament MVP honors.

Jordan Lee and Nick Goo both scored two huge goals to lead the Iolani Red Raiders to their 8th Div I Boys State Soccer Championship. Jordon Lee got things started off for Iolani scored his two goals early in the match to set the tempo while Nick Goo helped to seal the deal by scoring two goals of his own and assisting on the red Raider’s 5th and final score with a pass to Patrick Shimoko in the 70th minute to defeat Mililani 5-2. It was Iolani’s first title since 2000 and first under their new coaching staff. Nick Goo was named tournament MVP and Jordan Lee was also added to the all tournament team. Good job Red Raiders!

In the Div II HHSAA Boys State Soccer Finals it came down to the battle of neighbor islands as Kapa’a faced off against Hawaii Prep. The Ka Makani of Hawaii Prep struck first on a 25 yard blast from Korey Tsubota in the 6th minute of play. Kapa’a answered back in the 17th minute after a foul committed by Hawaii Prep outside the penalty box gave Ikaika Fuerte a direct kick that he conveted tieing the game up at 1-1. The Warriors of Kapa’a took the lead as Fuerte gave a lead pass to Caleb Sarsona where he out raced defenders and slamed a the ball past the goal tender to go ahead 2-1. Fuerte added his 2nd and game clinching score in the 50th minute of play to solidify the win and the 2009 State Soccer Championship for Kapa’a. The Punahou Buff n Blue add another title this year to the trophy case as the ladies soccer team defeated 3 time defending Champs Kamehameha in the HHSAA Div I State Soccer Championships. The game winning and only goal came from from Jayann Gabrio as she headed a pass from senior Aisha Price past the goal tender. Congratulations to the Lady Buff N Blue!

In Division II of the HHSAA Girls State Soccer Championships it came down to penalty kicks after regulation and two overtimes Pac Five and Kapa’a had yet to determine who would be going home with the title. With the penalty kicks all knotted up it was Geena Fong’s right hand corner kick that proved to be the difference that lead to the Lady Wolf Pack of Pac Five raising the trophy.
